With ScreenTrust, your school can provide a safe online experience for your students. In this article we will guide you through the preferred Google Admin settings for the ScreenTrust extension.


Disabling guest mode:


With guest mode students are able to bypass the school filtering policy and potentially expose them to inappropriate content.

To disable guest mode:

  • In Google Admin navigate to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers
  • Scroll to the "User experience" section
  • Change the "Browser guest mode" setting to "Prevent guest browser logins"


Managing apps and extensions:


To prevent students from installing games and non-educational apps to their device it is recommended to disable the installation of apps and extensions.


To restrict app installations:

  • In Google Admin navigate to Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions > Users & browsers
  • Click on "Additional settings"
  • In the "Allow/block mode" section click on the "Edit" button
  • Set the "Play Store" option to "Block all apps, admin manages allowlist"
  • Set the "Chrome Web Store" option to "Block app apps, admin manages allowlist"
  • Click "Save"


Disabling Incognito mode:

It is recommended that you disable the Incognito mode for Chrome browsers. Students can bypass filtering using the Incognito mode, potentially expose them to inappropriate content.


To disable the Incognito mode:

  • In Google Admin navigate to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers
  • Scroll to the "Security" section
  • Change the "Incognito mode" setting to "Disallow incognito mode"
  • Click "Save"


Disabling developer tools for Chromebooks:


One of the many ways that students can bypass filtering is with scripts and apps that are using the developer tools. 


To disable developer tools:

  • In Google Admin navigate to Device > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers
  • Scroll to the "User experience" section
  • Change the "Developer Tools" setting to "Never allow use to built-in developer tools"
  • Click "Save"


Blocking URLs:


One of the many ways students can attempt to bypass filtering set by the school. One of those ways is to stop or disable extensions or to modify settings for their Chromebooks. To prevent students do not disable extensions or modify settings is by blocking certain URLs in your user settings. 


To add blocked URL's


  • In Google Admin navigate to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers
  • Scroll to the "Content" section
  • Add the following URLS to the "URL blocking" list
chrome://settings
chrome://extensions
chrome://addresses
chrome://certificate-manager
  • Click "Save"


Disabling Task Manager:


It is possible for students to disable extensions and other processes that are needed to ensure a safe online experience. We recommended that you disable the Task Manager for students on their Chromebooks.


To disable the Task Manager:

  • In Google Admin navigate to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users & Browsers
  • Scroll to the "Apps and extensions" section
  • Change the "Task manager" setting to "Block user from ending processes with the Chrome task manager"
  • Click "Save"
